Nelson Richard Bartel, age 76, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. Preceded in death by, parents, Charles and Nedra Bartel, sister, Mary Alice Bartel Brown, brother, Paul J. Bartel, sister-in-law, Getena Hartman. Survived by, wife of 55 years, Jan Bartel, son, Scott Bartel, brothers, Charles (Bonny) Bartel and Mark (Sheree) Bartel, sister, Emilie (Dan) Henry, mother-in-law, Jean O'Harra, sisters-in-law, Judy (Bill) Hess, Dawn (Laura Puhl) Jones and Vickie Gotto, brothers-in-law, Bobby Gotto and David Hartman, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Nelson was a graduate of Columbus West High School and attended both The Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College. He proudly served in The Unites States Navy from 1969-1973 and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Columbus where he served in various council positions. He leaves behind many brothers and sisters in Christ. Special friends include Phil and Jinney Becher, Nancy Featheringham and his beloved Pastor Tom and Jeanne Phillips. Nelson was a rascal with a twinkle in his eye. His father-in-law once described him "with a face everybody wants to talk to." Nelson loved to talk and tell his stories. He will be greatly missed until we meet again in Heaven. Friends may call at St. John Lutheran Church, 2745 W. Broad St., Saturday, March 14, 2026 from 12:30-2:30 PM where service will follow at 2:30 PM. Pastor Thomas Phillips officiating. Arrangements are being completed with JERRY SPEARS FUNERAL HOME with CREMATORY, 2693 W. Broad St. Please have floral arrangements sent to the church.
