Laura Brom Smith, age 65, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University. She was born April 26, 1960, in Beloit, Wisconsin, to Joseph Peter Brom and Carole Ann Brom (nee Ottow). The family settled in Cincinnati, Ohio when Laura was a teenager. She initially worked as a dental hygienist, but her favorite job was being a mom to her 3 children. They were Laura’s greatest treasure. She brought contagious joy to every room she walked into, with a smile that instantly lit up a room and a laugh that could be heard for miles. She was pure sunshine. Laura cherished game nights with family around the table. Her favorite trips were to the mountains and the beach; she loved being outdoors. A walk with Laura meant learning the names of every plant, tree, or bird you passed by. In her free time, Laura tended to her flower garden, cooked meals for her family, read many novels, and cuddled her cats. She was a nurturer and a safe space for anyone lucky enough to come into her life.
Laura is survived by her life partner, Michael Stinson; daughter, Shelby Caton (Tyler); sons, Braxton Smith II and Joseph Smith; bonus son, Maguire Stinson; sisters, Valerie Scheef (John) and Cheryl Simpson; nieces and nephews; kitties Zella, Zack, and Zeke; and beloved grand-dog Nora.
Laura fought a fierce battle with breast cancer with unwavering hope to the very end. The family would like to thank Dr. Stover and the medical team at The James for their incredible care and compassion. A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, November 22nd at 4pm at Skip’s Bagel Deli, 12092 Montgomery Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45249, where Laura and Mike spent many mornings together. We welcome those who would like to wear her favorite color, periwinkle, or a shade of blue or purple.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please donate in Laura’s name to the Warren County Animal Shelter, where Laura would have taken home every single animal if she could have. https://www.homelesspets.org/ is the website to use, please leave a message in the comment section stating your donation in honor of Laura Smith, or share on the tribute wall. We want to extend our appreciation and thanks to those who have supported Laura and the family during this difficult time. As Laura would have said, “Thanks, y’all!”
