On Tuesday, December 24, 2024, Charles Elliott Matson passed away at Kobacker House, surrounded by his loving family.
Chuck would want us to remember his warm smile, firm handshake, and extraordinary sense of humor. He was a larger-than-life Ohio State Buckeye fan, a champion golfer and bowler. Above all, Chuck loved his family more than anything.
Born to Learned and Lela Matson, on March 25, 1934, Chuck spent his early years in Millfield, Ohio before moving to Columbus with his brother, Donald Matson. He graduated from Central High School, attended college at The Ohio State University, and then entered the U.S. Army, where he served our country from 1956-1958.
In his younger years, Chuck was known as a star basketball player and even better bowler where he helped his team win many tournaments. As life went on, Chuck’s focus turned to golf. Again, the high level of achievement continued with many awards and at age 58, he won the Club Championship in 1992 at Oakhurst Country Club. We cannot forget to mention that Chuck excelled at card playing and loved the horses. A favorite pastime for Chuck and his son, Craig Matson, was their yearly trips to Kentucky to watch the horse races at Keeneland. Now, his whole family enjoys this yearly event.
For most of Chuck’s career he worked at Rockwell International as a Financial Analyst. He retired from Boeing International in 1989. Chuck married Beverly Matson on April 23, 1982. They have been married for 42 years. Chuck, with his ongoing sense of humor and love, would continue to play tricks on Bev, sneak around the corner of the living room each morning with his wide smile looking for Bev. Together they enjoyed golf, long drives, Saturday pizza, and Sunday at the movies. When Chuck was not watching the Buckeyes or Sunday golf, he enjoyed family time, sitting by a bonfire smoking his cigar.
Chuck is preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, Donald Matson. He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly, son - Craig (Lynn) Matson, stepdaughter - Melanie (Tom) McGue, five grandchildren, Shannon, Emily, Sean, Kathryn, and Ben; his niece Lora (Mike) Miller, and great niece Morgan Figley. Chuck also has a great, great niece due January 2025. The family has asked that donations be made to Kobacker House, 800 McConnell Drive, Columbus, OH., 43214, in his name.
There will be a gathering of friends at JERRY SPEARS FUNERAL HOME, 2693 W. Broad St., Friday, January 10, 2025 from 6-8 PM. Funeral Mass, 10 AM Saturday, January 11, 2025 at Saint Cecilia Catholic Church, 434 Norton Rd. Father Thomas Buffer, Celebrant. Inurnment to follow at Saint Joseph Cemetery.
