Robert R. Grimm, 94, passed away on December 28th after a brief illness.
Preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Joyce (Phillips), daughter Amy Hagen, parents Bert and Chlorus Grimm of Letart Falls, OH. Survived by son, Steven Grimm (Karen) of Summerville, SC; daughter Christy Pearl (Matt Davian) of London, OH; and Erik Hagen (son-in-law) of Hilliard. Also seven grandchildren: Michael and David Grimm, both of Charleston, SC; Brian Grimm of Apex, NC; Troy Pearl of Columbus; Haylee Pearl of Brooklyn, NY; Ellie Hagen of Columbus, and Ben Hagen of Hilliard.
Born March 19, 1926 in Meigs County, OH, Bob graduated from Racine High School in 1944 and immediately served in the US Navy during World War II, including overseas service aboard ship in the Pacific Theater, including the Philippine Islands.
A 1951 graduate in journalism at Ohio University, Bob served as an officer in the US Army Reserve, retiring after 20 years service in 1974.
Bob worked 17 years in the Columbus United Press International news service and became UPI Ohio sports editor. He originated the UPI weekly ratings for Ohio high school football and basketball teams. He covered Ohio State football and basketball, as well as PGA and LPGA golf tournaments staged in Ohio in the 1960’s.
He later was employed by the Ohio Education Association, where he retired after 20 years of service. Bob and Joyce were long-time residents of Lincoln Village North, on the west side of Columbus.
Bob was a writer, a reader, a photographer, a baseball player, a lifelong Ohioan, and a Buckeye fan. He was charming, gentle, compassionate, independent and opinionated. He was cherished and he will be missed.
