Richard Lee Hynes, age 89, passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at his residence.
A standout football player at St. Clairsville High School, Richard married his high school sweetheart and fire baton twirling bride, Geneva, in 1954. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving in the Korean War. His dedication to his country inspired four of his grandsons to serve in the Marine Corps as well as the United States Army. Guided by a strong work ethic (and possibly because his household was filled with seven boisterous and strong-willed daughters), Richard worked two full time jobs, retiring from General Motors and Pfennigs. As an avid cyclist, he never missed an opportunity to ride his bike to and from work, and completed TOSRV, an annual two-day bicycle tour of the Scioto River Valley several times. He was a voracious reader, often using his shift breaks to catch up on his latest book. He had an uncanny ability to fall asleep anywhere, but nothing could match his unparalleled ability to take a piece of wood and turn into a treasure. For his granddaughters, the treasure included a surprise Christmas Eve gift of a beautifully crafted baby doll cradle.
Preceded in death, Mother, Helen (Egri) Hynes and Father, Vernon Hynes. Survived by his wife, Geneva (Selish) Hynes, brothers, Robert Hynes and Vernon Hynes. Daughters Robin Hynes Chapman, Dana (Tim) Gore, Margie Hynes, Janine (Tom) Cassell, Jennifer Hynes, Barbara (Dave) Corbett and Lauren (Eric) VanBibber. Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, other family and friends.
