Nicholas Mavromatis Obituary

Nicholas Michael Mavromatis, Age 96, passed peacefully surrounded by loving family on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at Meadow Grove Transitional Care in Grove City, Ohio. Nick was born in Kardamyla, Chios, Greece. Veteran of the Greek Hellenic Navy – last survivor if the B. Olga Torpedo in Lakki, Leros, Greece. He spent his life as a gentle warrior. Nick was the longtime, proud owner of George’s Coney Island Restaurant on the Hilltop in Columbus, Ohio. Throughout the years, he became a Westside legend. He considered his employees and customers his family. Nick was the entertainment and the face behind the counter known as the “Greek God.” Nick lived his life for his grandchildren, and he shared this with others up until his final days. He was much more than a papa. He was a provider, a mentor, an inspiration and a best friend. He spent his last few years surrounded by the love and extraordinary care of the staff at Meadow Grove where he made many friends and touched many lives. Nick was a devoted member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Columbus, Ohio. His faith and his heritage were of upmost importance to him. Nick lived a selfless life, loving and helping others. He loved to laugh and dance. Preceded in death by his parents Michael and Despina Mavromatis, Wife Dorma Mavromatis, Sisters Kalliopi and Eleni, and his Son Michael Mavromatis. Survived by his granddaughters, Nicole Mavromatis, Kelli Mavromatis and her fiancé Bryan Wendling. Grandson, Niko Mavromatis. His great-grandchildren, Mason Buck and McKenna Kautz. Niece, Katerina M. Kalogera Nephew, George Kontos and his wife Pelagia, and their children Michael and Demetris Kontos. Friends may call at JERRY SPEARS FUNERAL HOME,  2693 W. Broad St., Tuesday, 12-3 and 5-8 PM. Private funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Wednesday at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 555 N. High Street. Father Demetrios Gardikes officiating. Interment Alton Cemetery. The rules for Covid-19 will apply, with no more than 10 people permitted in the chapel at a time. The family has asked that donations be made to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 555. N High St., Columbus, OH, 43215, in Nick's memory.
