Geneva M. Hynes, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at her residence. A true coal miner’s daughter, Geneva wa sraised in St. Clairsville, Ohio. She graduated from St. Clairsville High School and was well-known for her fire baton twirling prowess. In 1954, she married her high school sweetheart, Richard, and they welcomed 7 – yes, 7! – daughters. She was a beloved fixture at Bishop Ready High School, avidly supporting the Silver Steppers and serving as the school’s long-time Attendance Secretary, a job that she truly loved. Even though she was the mom and grandma to several Bishop Ready students, she was a surrogate ‘mom’ and ‘grandma’ to many, and it wasn’t unusual for her to give an understanding nod and pass to tardy students. Some of her family’s fondest memories include Christmas Eve, where she and her mother, Jennie, would prepare a traditional Hungarian dinner, which included cabbage rolls, mashed potatoes, rice and lima beans. And, who can forget the pink fluffy stuff!? She was quite the collector of pennies, leaving stacks on the coffee table for any visiting grandchild to promptly knock over. She loved Neil Diamond before loving Neil Diamond was cool. On Sunday mornings, you may have heard the sounds of ‘Sweet Caroline’ softly floating throughout the house. Preceded in death by, husband, Richard, parents, James and Jennie Selish, sister, Nancy Koebel. Survived by, daughters, Robin Chapman, Dana (Tim) Gore, Margie Hynes, Janine (Tom) Cassell, Jennifer Hynes, Barbara (Dave) Corbett and Lauren (Eric) VanBibber, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, other family and friends. Friends may call at Saint Aloysius Catholic Church, 2165 W. Broad St., Wednesday, November 8, 2023 from 9-11 AM where Funeral Mass will follow at 11 AM. Father Patrick Toner, Celebrant. Interment Saint Joseph Cemetery. Arrangements have been completed with JERRY SPEARS FUNERAL HOME, 2693 W. Broad St.
