Delores H. Harrison, age 95, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2018 at Hilltop Senior Village.  She graduated from Holy Family High School in 1940; received Bachelor of Arts degree from Calumet College of St Joseph in 1970. After graduating in 1940, Delores went to work for the 5th Service Command at the old Ft. Hayes. In 1943, Delores and three other Ohio girls went to Martinsburg, WV., to work for Newton D. Baker General Hospital. Delores was a secretary for the hospital chaplains. After the war in 1946 she went to Chicago to work in the personnel department at Hines Veterans Hospital. Chicago is where she met her future husband Emanuel Harrison. They married in 1948 in Columbus, OH. In 1950, Delores went to work for the Social Security Administration as a secretary, then as a claims representative and field representative in Hammond, IN. Part of her duties included radio commercials and call-in shows answering questions about social security. In addition, she would meet with schools and businesses to explain social security and answer any questions. She was past president of Altrusa International, National Federation (Hammond Branch) and Business and Professional Women's Club (Hammond Branch). Upon retirement in 1978, Delores and Manie moved to her home town of Columbus. After Manie's death in 1979, Delores began volunteering at Mt Carmel West, where she spent twenty years in the medical records department. She also volunteered at St. Rita's from 1994 until they closed. She enjoyed traveling extensively with her husband. After his death, she traveled with family and friends making many trips in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. She loved the Columbus Symphony, the opera, broadway plays and live entertainment. She was an avid reader and member of the Sunset Literacy Club. She loved to play bridge and on occasion would play with her cronies into the wee hours of the morning. Delores was preceded in death by her beloved husband; Emanuel; parents, William and Margaret Higgins, Sr.; brothers and sister-in-law, William Higgins, Jr., Robert and Carol Higgins; niece, Rose Ann Slaughter; and nephew, James Higgins. She is survived by sister, Patricia Higgins, 9 nephews and nieces, 18 great nephews and nieces, 22 great great nephews and nieces. 3 great great great nephews and nieces. Delores hoped to be remembered as a kind person. She certainly was. She was a very special lady. She loved her Catholic faith and devotion to the Mass, the Holy Trinity and the immaculate heart of Mary. Friends may call at Jerry Spears Funeral Home, 2693 W. Broad St., Thursday, 2-4 & 6-8 PM. Funeral Mass, 10:30 AM Friday, St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 473 S. Roys Ave. Father Stanley Benecki, Celebrant. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery. Prayer service, 7:30 PM Thursday
